about

Fresh off the back of recent dreamy psych/garage rock single ‘And Here We Are’, Sydney/Eora’s kaleidoscopic 1960’s rock revivalist project (founded by Steven W. Schouten), Misty Lanes is following up with second single ‘The Glorious Ones’ — out November 1st via Third Eye Stimuli Records. Plucked from the same tree as the preceding single, ‘The Glorious Ones’ pulls us even deeper into the psychedelic world of Misty Lanes.

‘The Glorious Ones’ hits our sound system with jangly electric guitar and punchy drums before a fuzzed-out riff reverberates, while warbling theremin and trilling organ bring a haunting atmosphere. Once the huge wall of sound finally dips down, Steven Schouten’s vocals appear through the gloomy haze. The song’s uptempo energy, layers of vintage instruments and mysterious dark vocals lends itself to cult 60s bands such as The Music Machine and The Chocolate Watchband.

The idea for the song came to Steven Schouten when he stumbled upon a musical by Lynn Ahrens about a 17th Century Italian theatre group. The line; “King’s are building tombs for the ages while poets and fools fill their pages” stood out and inspired the basis of Steven’s lyrics for the song. Schouten elaborates; “The poets and the kings in this story aren’t that different from one another. Both are working on what's important to them; creating something that will hopefully outlast their lifetime and be a work to be remembered. I liked the idea that no matter what your pursuit in life is, pretty much everyone has the same end goal in mind”.

LYRICS

I need to find time to re-write the phrases
each day I’m staring at an empty page
as these times slip by I make excuses why
I call it writer's block you call it my bluff hey hey hey hey

Kings are building tombs for the ages
while poet fools are fillin up their pages
both are hoping they last
to give the future it’s past
forever never satisfied with their pennies and dimes

In a dream of recreation
we move station to station
chasing down ideas
if theres something in a story that's worth tearing all your hair out
then it must be heard
Even though it might be silly surely others know the feeling
chasing the chord

In a dream of recreation
we move station to station
chasing down ideas
If theres something in a story that's worth tearing all your hair out
then it must be heard
Even though it might be silly surely others know the feeling
chasing the chord
