about

Sydney/Eora’s kaleidoscopic 1960’s psych-rock revivalist project, Misty Lanes is re-emerging from the haze to announce their signing with Third Eye Stimuli Records and to bring us their first new single in over three years — the fuzzed-out, dreamy laid back number, ‘And Here We Are’. DIY composer and producer, Steven W Schouten launched Misty Lanes in 2017 with the release of his self-titled debut album and from there gained a loyal following as the live band became known for their exciting wall of sound. Misty Lanes’ is defined by reverberating guitars, punchy drums, dreamy organ melodies and delicate vocals that embody the soul of cult-classic late 60s bands like The 13th Floor Elevators and The Kinks.

Displaying a new level in Misty Lanes’ song-writing and production, ‘And Here We Are’ kicks off with a cruisy groove and catchy guitar riff. The verse bops along with jangly guitar and jazzy organ behind Steven Schouten’s smooth vocal melody, before we fall into the chorus where Schouten sings lovingly: “I’ll lay around with you and I hope that you’d do the same”. While the song clearly fits in the psych/garage world, the down tempo, spacious arrangement and authentic production reminiscent of bands such as Donna Blue and Sugar Candy Mountain adds a level of taste, setting Misty Lanes apart from other revivalist bands.

Lyrically, ‘And Here We Are’ is about friendships and the rollercoaster of emotions that come along with close friends as Steven explains; “the highs and lows of relationships is a complicated, beautiful subject that can be endlessly explored in so many ways”. Schouten found the phrase “...and here we are” interesting because people tend to use it as a way of ending a conversation or disagreement without a resolution as he explains; “the phrase was stuck in my head and kind of bothered me; the way it makes whatever came before it almost meaningless. With that in mind I wanted to flip that around and start with 'and here we are' and then launch into the song, making it almost like a television announcement on the Ed Sullivan show “and here we are with The Beatles!” — that kind of thing.”
